New Drumline Cadence: Street Beat

This is a drumline cadence I was writting in my spare time over the last couple months. I’ve been done with it for a while but thought it would be fun to put it up here.

Street Beat is dedicated to the MHS Drumline. It is written for snares, quints, and 5 basses.

Won Contest!

I found out today that for my second and final time participating in the Austin Symphony Orchestra’s Young Composers Contest my composition was selected as a winning entry! My new piece “Affirmation” was selected as one of the 2 winning compositions and will be premiered by the ASO this coming January and then performed again in April along with the 7 runner-ups. This will be my second composition premiered by the Austin Symphony after “Toward Sky’s End” last January.

Program Notes

“Klezmer Holiday” was written for the McNeil High School Saxophone Ensemble’s performance at the Austin Symphony Orchestra’s December 2011 Holiday Singalong Pops Concert. With a Jewish member of the group, I wanted to be sure to represent him and his background amongst all of the Christmas music.

The piece is very fast and energetic and features original melodies mixed with other traditional Jewish tunes, such as “Hava Nagila”. It opens with a very free improvised solo by the soprano and later features both alto and soprano improvised solos, mainly on an F vamp. It has a very demanding soprano saxophone (optional clarinet) part with frequent 16th note runs throughout the range of the instrument.

Stay tuned for a live recording by the MHS Saxophone Quartet.
