Program Notes

Hark! The Herald Angels “Swing” is a jazz arrangement of the Christmas standard, created for the McNeil High School Saxophone Ensemble. At an easy-moderate pace, the piece is simply an intro with 1 chorus of the melody in sax soli-style writing in the altos and tenor over a bass line in the baritone. The chorus may be repeated ad lib for improvised solos over the rest of the ensemble playing their written parts. Changes are included in every part. At the conclusion of the solo section, the melody can be played one final time, leading to a final chord in the 2nd ending.

Hark! The Herald Angels “Swing” is included in the Jazz Holiday Collection which contains original arrangements of “Hark! The Herald Angels Swing“, “We Three Kings“, and “Silent Night” and the original composition “Klezmer Holiday” written for the McNeil High School Saxophone Ensemble’s performance for the Austin Symphony’s 2011 Christmas Sing Along Pops Concert.

An video recording of the piece (featuring tenor and lead alto solos) can be heard below:
