Program Notes

“Affirmation” was composed as an entry in the Austin Symphony Orchestra’s 2nd Annual Young Composers Competition where it was selected as a winning entry. It is the second piece I have written for orchestra.

The composition of the piece began with a couple of musical themes and a rough blueprint of the structure. There was initially no specific theme, but as the piece evolved, it became clear to me that the feel of the music was reflective of my mental state in my final year of high school (i.e. busy, stressful, and chaotic, but longing for calmness and ultimately optimistic).

“Affirmation” was premiered on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Travis High School by the Austin Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Mairs. Since it’s premier, it has been performed numerous times by the  ASO and was first publicly performed at the Long Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday,  April 26, 2012 under the direction of Maestro Peter Bay.
